What this website does not do

  • Unless you accept analytics, it does not set cookies or use similar technologies, such as tracking pixels, to store or read information on your device. The only thing it stores is your analytics choice itself, if you make one.
  • It does not use advertising, social media plug-ins or marketing tools.
  • It has no accounts, forms, newsletter sign-up or online shop.
  • Fonts and images are served from this website itself. Unless you accept analytics, your browser does not contact any third-party service when you visit.

Analytics, only if you accept

On your first visit, a notice at the foot of the page asks whether we may count visits with Google Analytics. Unless you choose “Accept analytics”, no analytics code is loaded, nothing is sent and nothing is stored on your device for analytics. Rejecting is as easy as accepting, and the website works the same either way.

If you accept, we use the information only to see which pages and puzzle guides are read and used, so we can improve them. We do not use it for advertising, we do not try to identify you, and we do not sell it. Our lawful basis is your consent.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics 4 is provided by Google. If you accept, it receives:

  • the pages you view (their address and title) and the page that brought you here;
  • your browser, device type, screen size and language;
  • an approximate location (such as country and city) that Google derives from your IP address;
  • a few actions in the puzzle guides: starting and finishing a worked example, printing the quick rules or a practice puzzle, and showing a practice answer, each with the puzzle type (Sudoku, Kakuro or Futoshiki).

It never receives anything you type, your answers to puzzles or your contact details. Google Analytics stores a random identifier in cookies named _ga and _ga_T677C6HLYZ so that it can tell a returning browser from a new one. They last up to two years from your latest visit, unless you withdraw your consent or clear them sooner.

We have turned off Google signals and advertising features, we do not allow ad personalisation, and we do not send Google any user ID. Google keeps event-level data for 2 months and data linked to the identifier for 14 months after your latest visit; after that, only aggregated reports remain. Google processes this data on our behalf under the Google Ads Data Processing Terms. Our Google Analytics account also allows Google to use this measurement data to maintain and improve its own products and services; for that use, Google is a separate controller under its own privacy policy.

Changing your mind

Your choice is remembered in your browser’s local storage under nf-analytics-consent, which holds only “granted” or “denied”. It is needed to respect your choice and is not used for analytics. To change it, use “Privacy settings” at the foot of any page. If you withdraw, analytics stops straight away, the Google Analytics cookies are deleted and the page reloads once if needed. Withdrawing stops future collection; it does not erase what was collected before. Blocking cookies or analytics in your browser also stops it.

Hosting and security logs

Like any website, this site is delivered by a hosting provider (Vercel Inc.). When your browser requests a page, the provider’s servers automatically process technical information needed to deliver it securely: your IP address, the date and time, the page requested, your browser’s user agent and the referring page, if any.

This information is used only to deliver the website, keep it secure and diagnose faults. It is kept by the hosting provider for a limited period under its own retention policy, and we do not use it to identify or profile visitors. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in operating a secure, reliable website.

When you contact us

If you write to us, we receive your contact details, your name if you include it, and whatever you choose to tell us. We use this only to read and reply to your message and to keep a record of our correspondence. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in responding to enquiries or, where your enquiry relates to a possible agreement with us, taking steps at your request before entering into it.

We keep correspondence only for as long as it is needed for these purposes or to meet our legal obligations, and we never use it for marketing. Our email is hosted by Google Workspace, provided by Google, which processes messages on our behalf.

Sharing your information and international transfers

We do not sell personal information. We share it only with the service providers who host this website and our email, who act on our instructions; with Google for analytics, if you accept it, as described above; or where the law requires it.

Some of these providers are based outside the United Kingdom, including in the United States, so information may be processed there. Where that happens, we rely on the protections required by UK data protection law, such as an adequacy decision or the provider’s contractual safeguards.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have rights to access the personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to receive a copy of it. You do not have to provide any personal information to use this website, and we do not make decisions about you by automated means. To exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the details above.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please complain to us first at privacy@northfinchpress.com. We will acknowledge your complaint within 30 days, look into it, and tell you the outcome. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.

Changes to this notice

If we change how this website handles information, for example by adding a new feature, we will update this notice before the change takes effect and revise the date above.
